Abstract�� In order to evaluate the homogeneity of SiCp reinforced aluminum metal-matrix composites (MMC) fabricated by powder metallurgy, an ultrasonic velocity imaging was carried out with the method of thickness independent reflector plate (TIRP). Accuracy and precision were improved and the thickness was unnecessary in the velocity imaging with TIRP method. Firstly, the purpose of ultrasonic velocity imaging of MMC and basic principle of TIRP were introduced. Secondly, the structure of ultrasonic scan system was described. A double-scan method was applied to improve accuracy. Thirdly, the experiment results of ultrasonic velocity imaging of MMC specimen obtained with back surface echo (BSE), single-scan and double-scan method of TIRP respectively were compared and discussed. The images generated with double-scan method of TIRP have more details than those with BSE and single-scan method. Finally, the factors affecting accuracy and precision in the implementation were considered which may be used to advance the experiment.
