Abstract:
Transferred epithet or hypallage is a common figure of speech in both English and Chinese languages. Transferred epithet, a super-conventional colloc a tion, is composed of a transferred epithet and its new modified object. The logi cally modified object is sometimes presented in the context and sometimes outsid e the context. The semantic conflict between the modifier and the center word is the typical characteristic distinguishing a transferred epithet. The paper expl ores the causes of its formation, the classification of transferred epithet and provides the principles and strategies of transferred epithet translation.
