A Re-examination of Formal Equivalence in Translation

摘要: 形式对等作为奈达理论的重要组成部分,国内对其存在两种截然不同的观点。运用拉卡托斯的科学研究纲领分析形式对等在奈达理论中的演变过程及这种冲突观点产生的原因,指出奈达经过对他的理论的不断调整,放弃了纯粹的形式对等,而在功能对等的视角下考虑翻译中形式对等,认为科学发展规律认识论在理解翻译理论中具有重要作用。

Abstract: In China there are two different opinions on formal translation which is regarded as one of the important hypotheses in Nida's theories. Based on an analysis of the development of formal equivalence in Nida's theories by employing Lakatos's methodology of scientific research programme, the paper explains the cause of the two contradicted viewpoints and points out that Nida stops using absolute formal equivalence and puts it in the framework of functional equivalence by progressively adjusting his theories. And the paper demonstrates the important role of the epistemology of scientific developmental rules in understanding translation theories. -
