Language Differences in English Cross-gender Communication from the Pragmatic Perspective: Based on Desperate Housewives

摘要: 性别差异是言语交际中普遍存在的社会现象。从语用学的视角出发,以美剧《绝望主妇》中的异性会话作为语料,从合作原则、礼貌原则和面子论的遵守和违反三方面对英语异性会话中的性别语言差异进行了对比和分析。研究结果表明,女性在交际中更倾向于采取合作的态度,遵循礼貌原则,维护对方的面子;男性在交际中易违背合作原则和礼貌原则,威胁对方的面子。

Abstract: Gender difference is a universal social phenomenon in verbal communication. Through analyzing English cross-gender conversations from the pragmatic perspective, the author makes a comparison on the abidance and infringement of cooperative principle, politeness principle and face theory between males and females. The result shows that females tend to adopt a cooperative attitude, follow politeness principle and maintain others' face while males tend to violate cooperative principle and politeness principle and threaten others' face.
