Productivity and Total Factor Productivity Growth of Pig Breeding Industry in China:Empirical Analysis Based on SBM Directional Distance Function

  • This paper applies SBM directional distance function and Luenberger productivity indicator to measure China's pig breeding productive efficiency and total factor productivity(TFP)from 2004 to 2013 with an analysis of its influence factors. The major conclusions are as follows:higher efficiency of pig production provinces were mostly concentrated in western regions, overuse of roughage and labor input, unreasonable other material costs input as well as overweight of newborn animal are the main sources of pig production inefficiency in China. The growth of pig breeding TFP in China is -12.98% from 2004 to 2013, which is mainly restricted by the gradually decreased scale efficiency and technical progress rate. The cost proportion of concentrate fee in pig breeding and different level of regional economic development have positive and significant effects on China's pig breeding productive efficiency and TFP.
