English Press and Diplomacy in Peking & Tientsin

  • The opinions of English newspapers in Peking & Tientsin had greatly influenced t he diplomacy of Chinese government in the early 20th century. This article analy zes the geographical features, readers, financial sources, and the journalists’ backgrounds to illustrate the political and diplomatic purposes of those Englis h newspapers. The opinion sovereignty of China was greatly damaged due to their free comments. To confront this disadvantage in diplomacy, Chinese government to ok several measures like publishing our own English newspapers, taking advantage of foreign newspapers’ opinions, and restricting the postal system of the fore ign newspapers so that they may be of service to the Chinese diplomacy to a cert ain degree.
