Subject, Self and Other: the Poetic Construction of Lacan’s Theory of Desire

  • Desire is one of the most important subjects in literature. Studies of desire in literature tend to overemphasize such external determinants of the social circumstances, and ignore the psychological dynamics of writer's process of creation and character-words and deeds. The theory of desire put forward by the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan not only helps to reveal the fundamental roots for the predicament of human existence, but also explores the psychological dynamics for their social behaviors. It further breaks the traditional border between the disciplines of psychology and follows the tendency of "introverted" orientation in the field of literary research; it thus provides an effective way for the interdisciplinary studies of foreign literature.
