Development of the Prototype of High Speed Image Compression Device for Satellite

  • Hardware implementation of Multi Mode Adaptive Quantization Compression (MMAQC) algorithm for high speed image compression is investigated. Using pipeline and synchronization parallel arrays, the VLSI architectures for modeling, quantization and coding are proposed. The proposed hardware architectures are fast with low hardware complexity. Based on the architectures, a prototype of high speed image compression device for satellite is designed and manufactured with Field Programmable Gate Arrays. Test results show that at compression ratio of four, the processing speed of the device is above 1000Mbit/s, and the average PSNR of restored images is above 40dB.
